BMT Celebrates the Close of REACH Pre-Registration

12-Dec-2008

Since Regulation EC 1907/2006 on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of CHemicals (REACH) came into force in June 2007, all affected industries have been working towards the first major deadline; midnight on 1st December 2008. This deadline presented a challenge for industry to submit pre-registration dossiers for every existing chemical substance that is manufactured or imported into the European Union in a quantity of 1 tonne or more per year. Those who missed the pre-registration deadline are no longer able to manufacture, import or market un-registered chemical substances in the European Union.

Pre-registration under REACH is the first step towards a thorough assessment of all chemicals on the European market on their effects to human health and environmental health. These assessments will be conducted on actual uses and routes of exposure of these chemicals into our natural environment, with the legislation banning all uses not covered by the registration until they have been thoroughly investigated for health and environmental affects.

BMT staff held a much deserved celebration on 2nd December, to mark the end of the pre-registration window. This celebration was in recognition of the hard work by the REACH team in supporting our clients with REACH and submitting a vast number of pre-registrations over the last six months. BMT primarily offers REACH support from BMT Cordah's Aberdeen and London offices, and BMT Design & Planners' US office.

BMT has been actively involved in REACH for over 3 years now, and the team has developed a sound understanding of how organisations should be tackling this new legislation. During the last 3 years BMT has advised government and industry organisations, helped to develop industry positions for trade organisations, and of course provided first-class consultancy support to organisations in the chemical industry.

The next phase of REACH brings the monumental task of fully registering all pre-registered chemical substances on the European market. The first deadline of November 2010 is less than 2 years away, and will require efficient action by potential registrants in order to collate data, commission further testing, conduct human health and environmental risk assessments, and prepare and submit technical dossiers and chemical safety reports.

Please don't hesitate to contact BMT if you need any support or advice regarding REACH phase-in chemicals, or indeed new chemicals. Our team can also advise on the best action to take if you have missed the pre-registration deadline.
